Corrective Jaw Surgery

Orthognathic surgery involves the correction of developmental or acquired facial defects. The word "orthognathic" comes from the Greek words "ortho" referring to straight and "gnathic" referring to jaws. This specialized surgery corrects facial defects such as a receding chin or protruding jaw and the corresponding overbite or underbite.

Surgery may involve:

* Upper Jaw (maxilla)
* Lower Jaw (mandible)
* Cheekbones
* Nasal Bones
* Or other facial bones.

The surgery not only helps to improve a patients smile and appearance, but improves their ability to chew, speak and breathe more normally. Other benefits may include the relief of facial pain, headaches, snoring and obstructive sleep disorders.

The surgery involves careful planning including facial bone x-rays, models of the teeth, special photographs and diagnostic drawings or computer analysis. The surgery is usually performed from inside the mouth so there are no visible scars. Surgery is usually performed in the hospital with general anesthesia and may require an overnight stay.

Usual recovery and return to work is approximately 14 days.
